Being the capital of northern Sri Lanka, Jaffna is the best place to witness the Sri Lankan Tamil culture at its finest. Known as the Nallur Kannaswamy temple, Nallur kovil is one of the most famous Hindu temples in Jaffna. With colourful architectural elements of Hindu culture, the place has a great history that runs back to 948 AD.

Dedicated to the Hindu deity Lord Murugan, the kovil unfolds the authentic Hindu culture and traditions of the area. Located only 1.5 km away from Jaffna town, you can visit this magnificent religious attraction of the city easily. However, the best time to visit the place is during August, which is the Nallur festival season. One of the main highlights of the festival is the colourful chariot parade.

Jaffna

Located in the Jaffna district, Nagadeepa is a sacred Buddhist temple with a great history. According to history, Lord Buddha has visited the place to help solve an issue between two Naga kings who were fighting for a gem-studded throne. Today the throne is believed to be inside the Nagadeepa Dagabo.

Listed among the 16 holiest Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka, Nagadeepa temple is a sacred place for devoted Buddhists that they come to worship annually. This is an ideal place for you to escape the bustling city life of Jaffna, an unwind taking in the peaceful ambiance of the place.

Nagadeepa

Built by the Portuguese during the colonial era, Jaffna fort is a historic site that showcases the historical value of the area. Established in 1618 by the Portuguese, then the fort was used by the Dutch, who took over the country after the Portuguese.

The fort was highly damaged during the LTTE civil war; however, still, a considerable amount of the building is in good shape. When you visit Jaffna, make sure to pay a visit to the Jaffna fort and uncover another facet of Jaffna.
